Creative Solutions for the High Costs of Conflict on Business, Families and Communities
DAYTON, OH - Every year, disputes and conflicts take a heavy toll on business, families, and communities. According to recent data, the total cost of business court battles is estimated to be $210 billion annually. Another national study estimated the cost of family breakdown in the United States at more than $100 billion a year. A 2009 study by a major insurance carrier estimated the financial cost for family disputes involving the elderly to be $2.6 billion a year. Workplace disputes amount to billions of dollars annually with loss of productivity and decreased morale being difficult to calculate in the costs.
“Clearly unresolved negative conflict is taking its toll on our economy, communities and families ” said Geri Ellen Klein, mediator and conflict resolution administrator. Klein advocates that effective solutions are needed for in-house conflict resolution systems for businesses, families, and communities alike.
Klein has been performing diverse types of mediations for many years. Conflicts range from business, family, marriage, custody issues, disability, discrimination, auto/insurance claims, and elder decision-making, planning or disputes. Klein holds a Master's degree and she earned her mediation certificate from The University of Akron.
Klein points out that people often are not aware of the opportunity cost of conflict – that is, what are the economic or other benefits that could have been accrued had there not been conflict taking away one's precious time and resources? Opportunity costs are another way in which conflict damages individuals, communities and families, Klein added. Meaning, people do not stop to think "what could I be doing instead of being bogged down in this conflict."
Making peace between conflicting parties is the solution using structured, systematic conflict resolution-mediation. Working with an experienced professional mediator offers the hope of solving difficult problems with others in a way that does not cause further anguish and results in cooperative agreement by all involved.
"Can we avoid the high cost of this conflict, we need to ask, and then, we need to call for help," Klein said.
